We have created this step-by-step how-to-draw sunflower tutorial in 10 steps to make learning to draw one of these flowers easier.
How to Draw A Sunflower
Step 1
For the first step in learning how to draw a sunflower, we’ll start with a very simple step. First, draw a small circle.
The circle doesn’t have to be perfect, so you can draw it freehand with the pen.
Step 2
Once you’ve drawn your first small circle, you can draw another circle around it. This will be much larger, and as you can see in the reference image, it’s not a perfect circle either.
It has many small curved lines to make the center of your sunflower drawing look more like the center of a real sunflower.
Step 3
For the third step of your sunflower design, start with the petals.
Using the reference image as a guide is very handy here, as she draws some subtle triangular shapes along the outer edge of the sunflower center.
You should ensure they are all the same length and size while going around the circle.
Step 4
Your sunflower drawing is now taking shape! For this next step, draw some sharp points between the spaces of the previously drawn petals, as you can see in the picture.
This gives the petals more volume, and the sunflower looks much fuller.
Step 5
In the next step of this tutorial on how to draw a sunflower, let’s keep it simple. For this step, add a few dots to the inner circle of the sunflower’s center.
This will give your sunflower drawing the textured look you would see with a real sunflower.
Step 6
After adding some detail to the center, you can add some nice detail to the rest of the floral center.
As you can see in the image, we will draw some curved lines that look like semicircles. Add a good amount of those little lines in the outer circle to create a more prominent texture!
Step 7
The center of your sunflower design looks great now, so let’s add some detail to the petals now!
To do this, add some lines on the inner and outer petals, as seen in the reference image. This once again adds a nice texture to the look of your sunflower.
Step 8
Every sunflower needs a stem, so in this eighth step of this tutorial on how to draw a sunflower, we’ll add it.
I recommend using a pencil before reviewing it with a pen once you are happy with it.
First, draw two slightly curved lines from the bottom of the sunflower, making sure they are close to each other.
If you’re drawing in ink, leave some space on each line to add the leaves. If you use a pencil, erase the two blank spaces before drawing the lines with the pen.
If you’re using a pencil, let the pen’s ink dry on it before erasing the pencil underneath!
Step 9
After drawing your stem, you can add some leaves to your sunflower design.
To add them, you can use a variety of curved and straight lines to recreate the look of the leaves in the reference image.
Remember that each leaf has its thin stalk that protrudes from the main stalk of your sunflower design.
Step 10
Your sunflower drawing is now complete, and I bet it looks amazing! Your drawing only needs one more thing to complete, and they are gorgeous colors!
Sunflowers are known for their bright and eye-catching colors, so this should make a great image if you’ve added your colors.
You can use various mediums to colorize your drawing for an amazing variety of colors.
Incorporating different mediums such as acrylics, watercolors, crayons and pencils can each bring a stunning new element of color to your image.
Because of this, trying many different new mediums for a color boost can be fun. The only limit is your imagination, so we can’t wait to see how you finish your drawing!
